Description
This is a facsimile of a bible moralisée, or moralized bible, likely given to Louis IX of France by his mother, Blanche of Castile, during her regency (1226-1234). It contains the modified text of bible verses with commentary composed under the direction of the bishop William of Auvergne. Each scene and its commentary are accompanied by lavish illuminations, and the book was likely used to teach proper values to the young king. The original is housed in the Toledo Cathedral.
