Description

This cigarette advertisement marketed in January 1950 by the tobacco company Chesterfield uses multiple alluring elements to cause the viewer to consider how consuming these products may affect his or her popularity. To start, Chesterfield employed a celebrity endorsement from the famous actor and producer, Franchot Tone. As an affluent man with a reputable education at Cornell University, Tone suggests his social status in society and popularity may be easily obtained by consuming Chesterfield cigarettes as a means to ‘fit in.’
